We all hear about identity theft but when it actually happens to you, it will get you when you’re off guard. We know you are busy, so we’re keeping this simple with hope that you have time to do one of these three items:
Freeze Your Credit
This needs to be done with all three agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion). This is the best option to protect yourself. You will need to unfreeze if applying for any new accounts or need to make a large purchase.
Alternatives to Freezing Your Credit
These are temporary, and some will charge for services.
Fraud Alerts. Identity verification prior to opening accounts – typically a call to verify. Lasts for one year.
Credit Locks. Contract based – level of protection varies. You may need to pay for this service.
Credit Monitoring. Request a report from AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for activity you do not recognize.
Ways to Protect Yourself
Be careful with emails, text messages and calls. Fraudsters will try to get you to click on links or respond to their messages. (Most places like the IRS will only send you a letter through the mail. They will not call, text or send emails.) Calls that ask for personal information or pressure you to respond quickly are indications of scams. They also may avoid providing more details on the offer or business.
